Hawaii held a special session in October and November to consider same-sex marriage legislation. The Senate passed the initial bill on Oct. 30. The House Finance and Judiciary Committees held joint hearings that ran five days (55 hours of testimony) and included more than 1,000 people testifying. On Nov. 8, the House passed the Senate bill with an amendment that strengthened exemptions that allow religious organizations to not provide facilities, goods or services for the marriage or celebration of the marriage if it violates their religious beliefs. The Senate agreed to the amendment. Governor Neil Abercrombie signed the legislation on Nov. 13. It took effect on Dec. 2, 2013.
While traditional psychologists specializing in close relationships have focused on relationship dysfunction, positive psychology argues that relationship health is not merely the absence of relationship dysfunction. Healthy relationships are built on a foundation of secure attachment and are maintained with love and purposeful positive relationship behaviors. Additionally, healthy relationships can be made to "flourish." Positive psychologists are exploring what makes existing relationships flourish and what skills can be taught to partners to enhance their existing and future personal relationships. A social skills approach posits that individuals differ in their degree of communication skill, which has implications for their relationships. Relationships in which partners possess and enact relevant communication skills are more satisfying and stable than relationships in which partners lack appropriate communication skills.
Elsewhere I sucked at art. Put bluntly, I was awful. It was my most hated class and I was eventually ordered to drop the subject under guidance from a school counsellor. However, I certainly didn't hate art itself. It was around this time that I became fascinated with the rulebook associated with stereotypes of artistic expression. Who were these people that decided what qualified as worthy and what did not? Why must you colour within the lines? Elewhere I began to notice graffiti in a conscious sense. I remember my parents being apalled by tags which littered the lanes near to our house, I on the other hand was intrigued by the mysterious figures who drew on walls beneath the cover of darkness. How long did it take? Who were they? Why did they do it? Was it "art"?
